Just beyond the International Rosarium, the Bird Observation Station and Lake provide permanent and temporary shelter and nesting area for a wide variety of birds. The Bird Observation Station, built in conjunction with the Audubon Society, gives visitors an opportunity to view hundreds of varieties of birds, waterfowl and other animals in their natural habitat, in the beautiful sanctuary of Descanso Gardens.

About 150 bird species have been spotted at Descanso Gardens. On any two-hour birding walk, an average of 35-40 species can be seen. Early morning is the best time to see birds. Summer is the slowest birding time. The San Fernando Audubon Society has birding tours at Descanso Gardens on the second and fourth Sunday of each month. Meet inside the entrance at 8:00 a.m. To check upcoming dates go to: www.sfvaudubon.org.
