Celebrate Southern California's natural heritage. Follow meandering
paths through sage scrub and riparian habitats set amidst the sun-bathed
chaparral hillsides. Relax at Redwood Rest and catch the springtime color
of California poppies, other wildflowers and native flowering shrubs.
California
is blessed with a diversity of plants, many of which are not found
anywhere else
in the
world. These
plants
are showcased
in the
California Garden. The original eight-acre garden, designed in
1959 by famed horticulturist Theodore Payne, has been expanded in
recent years. Among the most striking attractions are Matilija poppies,
manzanitas,
and wildflower species.
The California Garden is also home to native wildlife, including woodrats
and trap-door spiders, both favorites of schoolchildren.
