Join us as Descanso bursts with color and activity this spring on March 26, 10am–4pm. All activities are free with admission, no reservations required.

Spring is a symbol of rebirth and awakening, and we invite you to explore new possibilities for the future with us. Explore our pollinator garden and take a sneak peak at our new nursery opening in 2022. Learn about native milkweed and other native plants we are growing/propagating and their relationship to pollinators. Find out about important work being done here at Descanso and by our partner organizations in and around Los Angeles.

Your (Un)natural Garden opening day @ Descanso Gardens

Artist Adam Schwerner asks visitors to please touch the art! Join us on opening day of Your (Un)natural Garden, an experience like nothing Descanso has had before. All activities are included in the price of admission, no reservations required.

Music Walk | 10am–2pm | Various locations
On opening day, the path to the Hilltop Gardens will be dotted with special live musical performances. Wander up to the exhibition and enjoy special musical performances along the way.

  • Talking Strings: Keenan Webster a virtuoso on the West African string instruments kora and kamile nguni and cellist Peter Jacobson weave original and traditional Griot compositions with improvisational chamber music.
  • Tsering Dorjee (Bawa): Tsering Dorjee is a Master in Tibetan performing arts from the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts, Dharamsala, India. A musician, dancer and actor, he teaches at the Tibet Arts Studio in Northern California and is deeply committed to practice and performance of Tibet’s folk arts.
  • Jessica Fichot: Accompanied by her accordion, toy piano, and fiery band, LA-based vocalist/songwriter Jessica Fichot draws from her French, Chinese, and American heritage to create an intoxicating repertoire of French chanson, 1940s Shanghai jazz, gypsy swing, and international folk – sung in 7 languages!
  • George T. Abe: George Abe is a musician who specializes in bamboo flutes and percussion of Japan. He was a founding member of Kinnara Taiko, one of the first taiko groups formed in the US. He teaches and performs in SoCal.
  • On That Note A Cappella: On That Note A Cappella is a UCLA performance a cappella group founded on the belief that there is a place for anyone in music. They strive to foster a fun-filled community while cultivating their unique sound, and spreading joy in their communities by sharing their art.

Join us for a walk, led by artist Adam Schwerner, who will share information about art installations leading up to the gallery and insights into the pieces in the Boddy House and Sturt Haaga Gallery.

With immersive surround sound installations in different areas of the garden, Tonalism invites participants to enjoy ambient music and consider sound as a way to reflect, meditate and connect with our surroundings and environment.

  • Visitors are invited to explore The Centering Center’s woven pavilion – a social space for interaction and reflection
  • Storytelling Workshop with Tina Orduno Calderon on Thursday, June 9 from 11am–noon
    • Tina will share stories and songs with guests at Descanso Gardens as well as speak about the revival of the Tongva language and the fluidity of culture which is integrally connected to language and place
  • Soundbaths on Thursday and Friday, June 9 and 10 from 5–6:30pm
    • Immerse yourself in the sounds of crystal bowls under the oaks
  • Four Quadrant Induction Meditation by Marcos Lutyens on Sunday, June 12 from 11am–noon
    • A guided meditation exploring internal, sensory, social and environmental realms as they relate to the inner self and to the intent of the Centering Center Pavilion

Tonalism (in Space) culminates in a late night, ambient music happening inspired by La Monte Young’s Dream House as well as the work of musicians and composers such as Terry Riley, John Cage, and Yoko Ono. The event features live DJ sets, visual elements, and the opportunity to be in the garden as night falls.

Visitors are encouraged to bring pillows, cushions, and sleeping bags to lay down, listen and watch for an extended period of time.
