Discover how scientists explore the world around us– from whats in your backyard to what’s happening in outer space. Learn about space exploration from JPL and Carnegie Observatories, talk to experts from San Fernando Valley Audubon Society, and find out more about the pollinators that help make our garden bloom. Grab dinner and a drink, enjoy the sunset, and wander the gardens as the Flashdance DJs spin all-vinyl sets of tunes.

$5 members; $15 nonmembers. Advance tickets required.

Rose Garden

Talk to scientists from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and learn about space exploration.

Planetarium Shows *limited space available | 5:40, 6:10, 6:40, 7:10, 7:40 & 8:10pm
Experience Carnegie Observatories‘ inflatable planetarium. Timed tickets available at the Rose Garden Pavilion beginning at 5:30. Participants must be able to sit on the ground for 20 minutes. Space extremely limited and is first-come, first-served.

Astronomy Talks | 6:30, 7 & 7:30pm
Learn about gravitational wave astronomy with Carnegie Observatories scientist, Dr. Philip Cowperthwaite.

Learn about the relationship between flowers and bees at this interactive display created by Descanso’s Native Garden Horticulturist, Layla Valenzuela.

Oak Grove

The Weaving Project | 5:30–7:30pm
Explore connections between art and our natural world. Together with artist Ben Allanoff, weave a community sculpture using sticks and natural materials. Stop by after 7:30 to view the finished project.

Flash Dance DJs | 5:30–8:15pm
The Flash Dance DJs spin an all vinyl set under the oaks.

San Fernando Valley Audubon Society | 5:30–7:30pm
Chat with experts from the Audubon Society and learn all about the birds that call Southern California home.

Pasadena Showcase House of Design Closes @ Descanso Gardens

Chosen as the 2019 Pasadena Showcase House of Design, the Boddy House will be open for tours from Tuesday to Sunday, April 21 to May 19. Tickets to the Showcase House can be purchased at pasadenashowcase.org.

The Pasadena Showcase House of Design is a nonprofit and all money raised from this event will support local music programs. The Boddy House will reopen to the public in late spring.

Free Tuesday {Tickets Required} @ Descanso Gardens

To join us on Free Tuesday, you will need advance tickets. Please note that there are no more tickets to Free Tuesday on May 21.


Descanso Gardens opens its gates for free the third Tuesday of every month, and the response has been great. So great, that in order to ensure a great experience for visitors, advance tickets are now required for all non–members on Free Tuesday. Join us on the next Free Tuesday on June 18.

Please note:

  • Tickets are free and must be reserved online in advance, by phone at (818) 949-4200 or in person. No tickets will be available on-site at the Gardens on Free Tuesday.
  • Tickets are available three weeks before the date of Free Tuesday. Reservations for Free Tuesday on May 21 will begin on April 30 at 10am. There are two times available to enter: 9am and 1pm. Once you are in the Gardens, you man stay until Descanso Gardens closes at 5pm.
  • All visitors – including infants – need a ticket.
  • Descanso Gardens members do not need a ticket.
  • Members of other gardens that participate in the Reciprocal Admissions Program must reserve a free non-member ticket.
  • Tickets will be scanned for entry and can only be used for the date and time printed on them.
  • Tickets are limited to 6 per household; those reserving more than 6 tickets will have all additional tickets invalidated. Ticket purchaser must be present with entire party in order to enter the Garden. Descanso Gardens staff may request identification from the ticket purchaser.
  • Please read our garden etiquette guidelines to better understand the expectations of behavior when visiting Descanso.
  • Food and picnicking are not permitted in the Gardens; however, you are welcome to use the picnic area adjacent to the parking lot. 
  • We cannot accommodate tour groups/buses on Free Tuesday. For group availability, contact grouptours@descansogardens.org or (818) 949-4202.

Community Service Day @ Descanso Gardens

Get hands-on gardening experience and help care for the Gardens at this volunteer opportunity. Instruction will be provided and work will be supervised by Descanso horticulture staff. This is a great opportunity for individuals, friends, and organizations.
 
· All experience levels welcome.
· Ages 16 or older.
· Remember to wear comfortable clothing and closed toed shoes. Please bring gardening gloves, water and a hat.
· Limited Space Available, RSVP required.
 
RSVP to volunteer@descansogardens.org by Wednesday, May 22. You will be sent additional instructions and will need to sign a waiver form in order to participate.
