{SOLD OUT} End of Summer Celebration @ Descanso Gardens

Please note that the End of Summer Celebration is sold out.

The gardens stay open extra late for the End of Summer Celebration. Grab a cold drink and relax to the tunes of the The Flashdance DJswander through the gardens to the sounds of live music. Enjoy the sunset, then end the night with some stargazing in the Oak Woodland. Bring your own flashlight! Advance tickets required.

Please note that tickets are limited to 6 per household; those reserving more than 6 tickets will have all additional tickets invalidated.

    • See the night sky through a telescope with the help of the Old Town Sidewalk Astronomers.

SILENCE: Ritual @ Descanso Gardens

On Sept. 7, Descanso welcomes SILENCE, a new concert series presenting music and performance unconstrained by genre, at specific sites within the Gardens. At SILENCE: Ritual, Zola Jesus, Low Leaf, and Miya Folick perform their own music, Saul Williams speaks, and artists Archie Carey, Jonah Levy, Odeya Nini, and Brian Walsh perform the spatial masterpiece Patangis Buwaya by Jonas Baes.

SILENCE, a new concert series unconstrained by genre within the Gardens, concludes on Sept. 28 with an exploration of the theme: Listening. L’Rain and Julia Holter perform their own works; Lisa E. Harris performs her pieces alongside the participatory deep listening pieces of Pauline Oliveros; and Gloria Cheng performs selected John Cage’s Sonatas and Interludes for prepared piano.

“The Sky Beneath Our Feet” by Pete Wyer @ Descanso Gardens

Come walk through an immersive sound installation by composer Pete M. Wyer. Inspired by the coast live oaks at Descanso Gardens, “The Sky Beneath Our Feet” was written specifically for Descanso. Played over 72 speakers throughout the Camellia Forest, visitors will experience this choral and instrumental composition as they walk through the garden. Free with admission.

Come take a relaxing summer walk after-hours through Descanso and savor the sounds of live music in different parts of the garden. Enjoy classical music from SAKURA Cellos, the sounds of sitar from the Paul Livingstone Ensemble: AROHI, and mystical music from the Middle East performed by the Yuval Ron Music featuring Manuel Gutierrez and Andres Vadin.

A unique and versatile cello ensemble, hailed as “brilliant” and “superb” by Mark Swed in the LA Times, SAKURA Cellos is built on the artistry and virtuosity of its artists. Drawing from the rich heritage of a repertoire that spans eight centuries, inventive programs are constructed around conceptual threads, with a commitment to opening new vistas of beauty and expression by showcasing the great warmth and scope of cellos.

5:45 & 6:45pm: Paul Livingstone Ensemble: AROHI 
The music of Arohi Ensemble weaves the classical ragas and intricate rhythmic architectures of South Asia with the counterpoint of Western chamber music. Arohi brings a unique blend of sitar, cello, tabla and drums together. Paul Livingstone and Peter Jacobson featured on multiple Grammy-winning records are joined along with dynamic percussionists Neelamjit Dhillon on tabla and Dave Lewis on drums.

6 & 7pm: Yuval Ron Music
In a vivid program, the Yuval Ron Music – with guest flamenco artist Manuel Gutierrez and Andres Vadin – explores the Jewish and Gypsy traditions of Andalusia, Spain. The sublime and stirring guest gypsy-flamenco artists evoke Andalusia in the Middle Ages and explore a vision for the 21st century.
