On Sunday, January 19 at 10am, two “Hiroshima Survivor Trees” will be presented to Descanso from the Rotary Heiwa: Hiroshima Survivor Tree group. These persimmon trees grew from the seed of a plant that survived the first atomic bomb in Hiroshima, Japan in 1945. Descanso visitors and members are welcome at this event.
Hiroshima Survivor Tree Re-Planting is a project by Rotary Heiwa: Hiroshima Survivor Tree, a group of Rotarians in Japan, U.S. and Russia. Other survivor trees can be found at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center in Little Tokyo, Downtown LA, Storrier Stearns Japanese Garden in Pasadena, Verdugo Woodland Elementary School, Monte Vista Elementary School and Wilson Middle School in Glendale Unified School District.

Join us for a walk-through of fruiting bodies with artist Jessica Rath at the Sturt Haaga Gallery on Sunday, January 26 from 1–3pm.
Connecting plants, animals and Descanso Gardens, Jessica Rath and curator Pamela Bailey Lewis present the first major survey of Rath’s contemporary works of art and her exploration of the human manipulation of agriculture and food production.
This exhibition is supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Department of Arts and Culture.

Garden Sprouts is a grownup and child (ages 2-4) class where the seeds of love for nature are planted and nurtured. Children and adults participate in story time, songs, hands-on nature, science, art, and gardening activities, as well as prepare a healthy snack together. All activities are designed specifically for children’s fine and gross motor skills and social development.
