Join us for a special pop-up yoga class led by Joyce Shuman on Saturday, January 22 from 8:30–10am in the Rose Garden. Rejuvenate your body and mind after a brisk, 25-minute garden walk, a 60-minute yoga breath and movement practice.

About the Wellness Program series
This series highlights mindful experiences as an opportunity to slow down and find meaningful moments observing, immersing, and walking in nature. These one-hour sessions can be taken as a series or as a stand-alone session.
This Wellness Program is led by Mariko Tu. Mariko is an educator specializing in mindfulness and meditation and has developed and led mindfulness programs at the Norton Simon Museum and Descanso Gardens.
Garden visitors are invited to add their own poems to a community-created haiku installation from February 5–27 as part of What Blossoms: A Poetic Celebration of Camellias.

What Blossoms: A Poetic Celebration of Camellias
Celebrate camellias and poetry throughout the month of February at Descanso Gardens.
Camellias can bloom in our coldest and darkest winter season. These brilliant flowers, native to Asia, contain stories of resilience, hope, loss and ingenuity. Descanso supports one of the largest collections of camellias in North America, with more than 3,500 known and recorded plants, representing over 600 varieties.
In collaboration with accomplished poets Amy Uyematsu and Peter Levitt, Descanso is pleased to offer a series of programs that invite exploration, reflection, and participation.
Poets from around the Los Angeles area come together on Saturday, February 5 to share poems about nature. Moderated by author and historian Naomi Hirahara, and featuring poets Traci Kato-Kiriyama, Kenji Liu, Phoebe MacAdams, Mariano Zaro and Gloria Alvarez, the reading will conclude with an invitation for program attendees to join a mini-workshop on writing haiku.

Join us for the Haiku Walk & Workshop on Saturday, February 12 from 10:30am–12pm. Led by haiku poet Debbie Kolodji, this workshop will include time to walk in the garden and be inspired by the camellias and instruction on writing the traditional Japanese three-line poem.

Before or after the walk, you are welcome to visit the Southern California Camellia Council show in Van De Kamp Hall (9am–4:30pm).

Join artist Virginia Hein for a four-week series beginning Saturday, March 5 that focuses on exploring sketching landscapes of Descanso. Bring a spirit of curiosity, play and experimentation while learning to work confidently.
