“fruiting bodies” Walk Through @ Descanso Gardens

Join us for a walk-through of fruiting bodies with artist Jessica Rath at the Sturt Haaga Gallery. Admission will be free from 1–3pm on Sunday, Dec. 15.

Connecting plants, animals and Descanso Gardens, Jessica Rath and curator Pamela Bailey Lewis present the first major survey of Rath’s contemporary works of art and her exploration of the human manipulation of agriculture and food production.

This exhibition is supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Department of Arts and Culture.

Join camellia experts from the Southern California Camellia Society for a tour of Descanso’s collection at 2pm on Saturday and Sunday. Dr. Bradford King will lead the walk on Saturday, and James Fitzpatrick will lead the walk on Sunday.

Student Community Service Day with the Pasadena Garden Club @ Descanso Gardens

The Pasadena Garden Club will be participating to get hands-on gardening experience and help care for the the Gardens at this volunteer opportunity. Instruction will be provided and work will be supervised by Descanso horticulture staff. 
 
· All experience levels welcome.
· Ages 12-15.
· Bring gardening gloves.
· Adult chaperones welcome
· Limited Space Available, RSVP required.

Peace Tree Ceremony @ Descanso Gardens

On Sunday, January 19 at 10am, two “Hiroshima Survivor Trees” will be presented to Descanso from the Rotary Heiwa: Hiroshima Survivor Tree group. These persimmon trees grew from the seed of a plant that survived the first atomic bomb in Hiroshima, Japan in 1945. Descanso visitors and members are welcome at this event.

Hiroshima Survivor Tree Re-Planting is a project by Rotary Heiwa: Hiroshima Survivor Tree, a group of Rotarians in Japan, U.S. and Russia. Other survivor trees can be found at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center in Little Tokyo, Downtown LA, Storrier Stearns Japanese Garden in Pasadena, Verdugo Woodland Elementary School, Monte Vista Elementary School and Wilson Middle School in Glendale Unified School District.

Cultivate: Stories in the Stars @ Descanso Gardens

Feed your curiosity about science, nature and plants during our new Cultivate series. On Saturday, February 1, bring your flashlight and bundle up after dark for Cultivate: Stories in the Stars. See a performance by Leslie K. Gray featuring her enchanting shadow puppetry. Learn about the stars and constellations and enjoy music, food, crafts, and discovery in the garden after the sun has set.
