Join artist Virginia Hein for a four week series that focuses on exploring color to sketch the summer landscapes of Descanso. Bring a spirit of play and experimentation while learning to work confidently with color.

“La Reina de Los Ángeles” Artists’ Reception @ Descanso Gardens

Join us from 5–7pm in the Sturt Haaga Gallery as we celebrate the artists of La Reina de Los Ángeles. DJ Matthew Rubino will be spinning vinyl, and drinks will be available at a no-host bar.

Admission is free to Descanso Gardens from 4:30pm onwards Sunday, September 16.

“Chinatown” Screening @ Descanso Gardens

Set in 1937 Los Angeles, Chinatown explores the intertwined relationship of water rights and power which played out in the California Water Wars. Faye Dunaway and Jack Nicholson star in this award-winning 1974 film, which is presented as part of the La Reina de Los Ángeles exhibition at the Sturt Haaga Gallery.

“Exquisite Corpse” Screening @ Descanso Gardens

Originally screened in 2016 at the CURRENT:LA Water public art biennial, Exquisite Corpse follows the LA River from its origin to the ocean. This film is presented as part of the La Reina de Los Ángeles exhibition at the Sturt Haaga Gallery.

Japanese Garden Celebration @ Descanso Gardens

Celebrate Japanese art and culture at this annual festival set in our Japanese Garden. Enjoy family-friendly events including a tour of the garden, taiko drum performances and crafting.

Ikebana Display | 9am – 5pm

Taiko Drummers | 11:30am & 1:30pm
Kishin Daiko drummers perform heart-pounding feats of percussion.

Painting Nature @ Descanso Gardens

Class meets for six Saturdays from October 13 – November 17. Join artist R. Jay Ewing for a watercolor class for beginning and intermediate students.
