Sketching on Location @ Descanso Gardens

4 Saturdays starting on February 4th. Meets in Minka in the Japanese Garden.

Join artist Virginia Hein in this 4 week art series to learn to sketch the varied landscapes of Descanso using a variety of media. $90 members, $120 nonmembers. Registration deadline is Monday, January 30th.

Camellia & Tea Festival @ Descanso Gardens

Celebrate the camellia, which brightens winter days with its colorful blossoms and warms the heart when brewed into tea! Activities free to members except where noted. Click here for Sunday’s schedule.

Chado Tea Tasting | 10am – 2pm
Sample a variety of teas and learn about tea (Camellia sinensis) from the experts of Chado Tea of Pasadena.

Camellia Crafts | 10am – 2pm
Bring the youngsters for hands-on art activities.

Camellia Walks | 9:30am
Take a guided walk of the Descanso Camellia Collection.

Camellia Exploration Station | 10am – 2pm
Look at a variety of Camellias and do some up close investigation of these special plants.

Invertigo Dance Theatre Performance | 11am & 1pm
Enter a magical world of motion with Invertigo Dance Theatre.  Enjoy a lively performance of dance and live music, followed by an interactive workshop.

Cherry Blossom and BLOOM! Member Preview @ Descanso Gardens

Skip the crowds and check out the blossoms at this exclusive member preview! The Gardens stay open until 7pm exclusively for members. Take a guided walk at 4pm through the gardens to learn about cherry blossoms and other flowering trees, and end up at the Sturt Haaga Gallery to preview Portraits of the Garden: BLOOM!. Meets at Center Circle. A shuttle will be running from 4:30 – 7:30pm.

Purchase Japanese influenced cuisine, including tempura and sushi selections.

Performance by Minyo Station | 11am, 1pm & 3pm
Minyo Station presents a jazzy style of Japanese folk music blending traditional Japanese music, Minyo, with various genres of Western music.

BLOOM! Public Opening @ Descanso Gardens

Portraits of the Garden II: BLOOM! celebrates the flower – probably the best known and most enjoyed feature of Descanso Gardens. Help cover the halls and walls of the Sturt Haaga Gallery into a most extraordinary bouquet of flowers by submitting your artwork for the show. Members get a 75% discount on the entry fee, email membership@descansogardens.org for the code. For more information about calls for entry, click here. Performance by June Kuramoto | March 5, 11am, 1pm & 3pm
June Kuramoto performs on the koto, the national instrument of Japan. A classically trained musician, she is a founding member of the Japanese-American fusion ensemble Hiroshima.
