Descanso Gardens is a unique Southern California landscape distinguished by its specialized botanic collections, historical significance, and rare natural beauty. Our mission is to practice exemplary stewardship of Descanso’s distinctive character and assets; offer people an experience close to nature; and cultivate understanding of the natural world and people’s place in it through inspiration, education and example.
In a “normal” year, over 500,000 visitors enjoy the Gardens annually. A significant portion of this attendance comes from the busy spring season, as well as the holiday light event, Enchanted Forest of Light. In 2020, due to the pandemic, Descanso closed its doors during the peak of spring bloom, from mid-March to mid-May. The Gardens also made the difficult decision to cancel Enchanted this year in the interest of public health guidelines which discourage large gatherings. These two closures had an impact on our budget, as admission fees and Enchanted tickets represent a significant portion of our operating revenue. Your philanthropic support at this time is greatly appreciated!
The Gardens are operated by the Descanso Gardens Guild, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, in a public-private partnership with Los Angeles County. The annual budget of $12 million is funded by memberships, philanthropic gifts, and admission fees. The Guild receives a management fee from its Los Angeles County partner equal to 3% of the Gardens’ annual budget.
