Cultivate: The Stories Plants Tell

Surround yourself with other nature-lovers at Cultivate, a monthly event that brings together music, dancing, refreshments, and engaging experiences in nature that will connect you more deeply to the world around you. 

Wander the grounds at your own pace, with new activities around every corner. The event is free with admission, so come celebrate summer at Cultivate!

Dyes and Design with Jenny and Audrey 

  • Join Descanso’s own gardeners to learn about how to make dyes out of plants, observe a demonstration, and dye your own project!
  • Location: Minka in the Japanese Garden
  • Time: 4:30–7pm

Descanso’s Camellias and Beyond

  • Hear firsthand the stories about Descanso’s plants, and the ripple effect of the stories plants tell in this panel conversation among Autumn Ayers, our Garden Records and Collections Manager, Wendy Cheng, historian and professor, Mary Swanton, third-generation co-owner of San Gabriel Nursery & Florist, and Mary Uyematsu Kao, writer and granddaughter of F.M. Uyematsu, whose camellias continue to make Descanso shine. The panel will be moderated by Edgar Award-winning author Naomi Hirahara.

Compton Health Bar

  • dani solorio (she/they) is a community herbalist and the founder of Compton Heath Bar, a holistic herbal medicine store where herbal medicine is mindfully made and offered to the community. dani will be leading herbal medicine tea demos highlighting herbs and flowers currently in season that we can collaborate with to support our respiratory health, as we go over basic traditional folk herbalism principles when putting together and consuming a medicinal tea blend.

Flashdance DJs

  • Have a drink in the Rose Garden bar and enjoy a mix of classic hits and contemporary songs by our popular guest DJs

  • Create colorful crayon rubbings using different natural materials from the gardens!
