Rooted Workshop: Saikei Jade Forest

Create your own living jade forest inspired by the Japanese art of Saikei.

Space is limited—register in advance. Registration will open to members on October 5 and to non-members on October 9.

Using stone, bonsai soil and Portulacaria afra, commonly known as the jade plant, you’ll learn the principles of landscape composition, balance, depth, and perspective while creating a unique living landscape to take home.

Daniel Deephouse will guide participants through planting, pruning, styling, and long-term care in this beginner-friendly workshop. All materials included.

$75 for members, $80 for non members

About Daniel Deephouse

Daniel Deephouse is a lifelong bonsai practitioner and educator from Perth, Australia. He began studying bonsai at the age of eight under the guidance of his grandmother, Elizabeth Deephouse. He is currently the Assistant Curator of Bonsai at The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens and teaches private, group, and corporate workshops. His work centers on using bonsai to foster presence, creativity, and connection to the natural world.
